Makibinyane Thoso is a Senior Researcher at the Cross-Border Road Transport Agency (C-BRTA), South Africa, with more than 25 years of experience in transport research, statistics, trade facilitation, and cross-border transport policy. His work focuses on transport governance, market access regulation, compliance management, and the role of trade and transport systems in supporting regional integration and industrial development across Southern Africa.

Makibinyane has extensive expertise in data analysis, transport modelling, regulatory impact assessment, and compliance monitoring systems. He played a leading role in the conceptualisation and implementation of South Africa’s Operator Compliance Accreditation System, a pioneering risk-based compliance framework designed to improve regulatory performance and efficiency in cross-border road transport. His research contributed the advancement of coordinated border management and trade facilitation initiatives within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

He has authored and presented numerous transport and trade policy papers at regional and international forums, He holds a Master’s degree in Geography, specialising in Geographic Information Systems, and is pursuing a PhD in Engineering (Development and Management Engineering) at North-West University.
